    • [with Dilip Gaonkar and Craig Calhoun]. "Democracy is Incomplete: Response to Crawford, Hechter, Zielonka, and Zipperstein." Global Perspectives 4, no. 1 (2023).
      Abstract:
We appreciate four reviews addressing our book, Degenerations of Democracy. Each points to ways democracy may be advanced and also raises questions about our argument. We respond to the latter and briefly build on the former. These are directions for further work, but none stands alone or offers the crucial path forward. This is not surprising, since no democracy in the past or today, even when celebrated as good, just, secure, and stable by a majority of its citizens, has fully realized its normative potential and utopian aspirations. There is always more to be achieved, and there is always potential for degeneration.

    • [with Émilie Martini]. "Résonance Et Théorie Critique." Réseaux (Centre National D'Études Des Télécommunications (France)) 235, no. 5 (2022): 47-71.
      Abstract:
    • "Romantic Poetics." Revue De Métaphysique Et De Morale 108 (2020): 461-495.
      Abstract:
In this unpublished text excerpted from a book he is currently writing, Charles Taylor proposes an analysis of Romantic poetics which returns to its sources in the Kabbalah, the theory of signatura rerum and Renaissance philosophy. He demonstrates the originality of Romantic poetics as a response to the “disenchantment of the world”, which characterizes modernity. Thus, he sketches out an understanding of language and of the poetic function of language focused on the dimension of disclosure in language, leading to the conclusion that “serious philosophy cannot afford to ignore poetic insight”.

    • "Resonance and the Romantic Era: A Comment on Rosa’s Conception of the Good Life." In The Good Life Beyond Growth, edited by Hartmut Rosa and Christoph Henning. Routledge, 2017.
      Abstract:
This chapter explores a facet of Hartmut Rosa's fertile idea, that the good life is impossible without a relation of resonance between self and world. The connection here is of an intrinsic nature and meaning, not causal and instrumental, but constitutive. In this mode, the subject is capable of "appropriating" the world in a manner that transforms the self's essence through "connection". In discussing the origin of the concept in the period, the chapter focuses on humans' relation to nature and to art; and moreover, showing the two relations to be closely connected and interwoven. The chapter concentrates on German writers of the 1790s, articulating the thinking, one might say the ontology of the Romantic generation of the 1790s. What Romantic poetry strives to do is recover an adequate reading, and this would of necessity mean the creation of a mode of symbolic access.

      Abstract:
This essay by Charles Taylor draws from a lecture sponsored by the SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program, called “Ways Democracy Can Slip Away,” on October 17, 2016, at Roosevelt House in New York City, and is copublished in The Democracy Papers. Taylor was the program’s 2016 Democracy Fellow. Speaking in the weeks before the 2016 US election, Taylor discusses the character of modern democracies and their vulnerability to what he call “spirals of decline.” He concludes with a reflection on the present populist moment.

      Abstract:

      Abstract:
This essay discusses the difference between the concepts of multiculturalism and interculturalism, both concepts which are current on the canadian scene. it argues that the difference between the two is not so much a matter of the concrete policies, but concerns rather the story that we tell about where we are coming from and where we are going. in some ways, we could argue that interculturalism is more suitable for certain european countries.

      Abstract:
There are two connected illusions which have become very common today. the first consists in marking a very sharp distinction between reason and faith -- even to the point of defining faith as believing without good reason! the second is to take as a model of rationality what we might call "disengaged" reason. one illusion exaggerates the capacities of "reason alone" (allusion to kant intended); the second sees reason as essentially "dispassionate". moreover, the two are closely linked. this paper argues against both, while exploring the link.

      Abstract:
This paper tries to examine what is at stake in the various projects to 're-enchant the world', which have arisen in the face of modernity. it sees the ambition to 'save the sacred' in this context. it poses a number of problems which arise for such projects, and in particular examines the notion of 'polytheism' which is central to the recent book of sean kelly and hubert dreyfus, all things shining.

      Abstract:
The article presents responses on several articles which includes one by karl smith on deep engagement, anna branfod on non-overlapping magisteria, and jean-paul baldacchino on the pre modern form of religious belief in a secular age. he agrees on smith's study and says that disengaged knowing is a valuable addition. he tells that branford's story is interesting but does not take into account the ways in which magisteria have overlapped and changed each other. he describes baldacchino study as showing his main thesis about a secular age.

      Abstract:
The article, part of a special issue devoted to religion and secularism, discusses the historical polysemy, or multiple meanings, of the terms "secular" and "secularization." the history of the "secular" in latin christendom, or europe of the middle ages, is discussed as denoting earthly matters, which were nonetheless seen as bound up with heavenly or godly matters, tended to by the christian church. the development of the "secular" into a separate and independent sphere of activity in the modern era is then discussed, including the rise of deism and the notion of the separation of church and state as understood in the united states. variations in the meaning of the secular in non-western, non-christian societies are also discussed.

      Abstract:
Modern moral philosophy is unable to deal with the diversity of goods because it tries to solve the problems it rises by a top priority, all-trumping morality. but any adequate account of our lives has to do justice to both difference and unity. to attain this goal, we have to begin to make distinctions, because everything hangs on the details in moral reasoning. and the resources of moral reasoning are greater than they are normally supposed to be in today moral philosophy. to find a "measure" between the aspiration to oneness and the diversity of goods is the true secret of our "living a life".

      Abstract:
Identity is a complex concept which refers both to the psychological dimension of self-consciousness and to the social and political dimension of collective identifications. with modernity, identity gains a new meaning. it does not only allude to the horizon of a moral world, as in ancient times, but to something personal and original which must be recognized by others. in the case of nations, individual and collective identities reciprocally interact, since a nation presupposes a unity of discussion and reciprocal understanding which must be recognized in the international public sphere. these three elements, identity as authenticity, recognition and public sphere, are deeply interrelated in our modern civilization and constitute the background for "the politics of identity.".

      Abstract:
The framework presented by spinosa, flores, and dreyfus (henceforth SFD) centres on a new view of entrepreneurship. this sees the entrepreneur not simply as the instrumentally rational agent of economic maximization, but as someone committed to new modes of practice. this rescues the entrepreneur from the misleading stereotype which both right and left have conspired to accredit in our society. it allows us to see that there is more than one type of entrepreneur, and it defines one which is potentially very benign in democratic society (and also social-democratic societies). SFD propose to see political initiative-taking in democratic societies as analogous to this kind of entrepreneurship, and they extend their analysis to deal with the maintenance and fostering of solidarity. the framework is very illuminating for the first case, and partially, although less so, for the second.

      Abstract:
In "liberalism, community and culture", will kymlicka suggests that the cultural resources with which communitarians have been concerned, inasmuch as they are prerequisites for the individual choice of the good, are appropriate objects of liberal protection. but kymlicka's liberalism fails to fully meet the concerns of those who see their communities as intrinsically valuable -- not merely as necessary means for the clarification of their options. ultimately kymlicka's approach shares in the tendency of liberalism to reduce manifold values to the single standard of equal concern for individuals -- which results in a paternalistic disregard for those individuals' actual motivations.

      Abstract:
My argument in this piece is that herder represents a turning point in theory of language in the western tradition. he turns away from instrumental-designative theories of meaning, and innovates with a theory which I want to call expressive-constitutive. certain contemporaries theories, not only of language, but also of literature and culture, make sense within the framework set by this herdian turn. this has, of course, also been contested, so that two rather different philosophical cultures exist today which are divided by their different conceptions of language.

In recent years, the notion of civil society has come back into circulation. the intention is to invoke something like the concept which developed at the turn of the nineteenth century, which stands in contrast to 'the state'. but in fact those who introduced it were trying to articulate features of the development of western civilization which go back much farther.

      Abstract:
The thesis of this paper is that there are two main types of theory of modernity; one defines modern society essentially "aculturally", in terms of the earlier "traditional" horizons it has lost or sloughed off; the second sees specific modern understandings of the self and society as the key defining factors. I lean to the second type of theory, and try to illustrate it with a discussion of modern inwardness.

This is a discussion of theories of justice which attempt to give the right priority over the good, as well as the theories of liberalism which are connected with them. rawls and dworkin are among those discussed. the thesis is that this priority of right over good is mistaken, and prevents us from posing difficult issues in morals and politics in a clear fashion. an attempt is made to distinguish a number of different issues which are often run together in these discussions, and hence to redefine the way the questions are usually put.

This paper is an attempt to explore what the form of a theory of justice ought to be. the author agrees with aristotle that a theory of justice ought to be sensitive to the goods pursued in each society, and therefore cannot be general and invariant across societies. A theory of justice has two sides, of which one is concerned with distribution according to desert or merit; although this may enter into conflict with the other side, which derives from the good sought or recognized.

    • "Formal Theory in Social Science." Inquiry 23 (June, 1980): 139-144.
      Abstract:
Contemporary social science tends to suffer from too many misplaced attempts at mathematical or game-theoretical formulation, and much effort is wasted in either propounding such formulations, or in showing their inanity. jon elster does not entirely escape this himself, but "logic and society" is truly remarkable in pointing the way to some possibly very relevant formalizations. these are particularly to be found in the chapter on "contradictions of society". there elster attempts to delineate the properties of certain self-frustrating predicaments of action, and to relate them as well to hegelian-marxist conceptions of contradiction. it may be, however, that the relevance of this analysis is restricted to societies whose form of life has become atomistic, and whose members thus function in an individual-calculative way in many spheres of life. but even so, formalizations of the kind elster provides would be useful in defining one kind of historically evolved society among others.

      Abstract:
The argument of this paper is to the effect that the classical empiricist notion of an impression, more recently referred to as a "sense-datum," ii incoherent. the aim was to identify a bit of basic evidence which would be both independent of our epistemic activity and yet free of claims about extra-mental reality. I argue that nothing can meet both these requirements, and thus that theories of which this is the key concept are incoherent.

      Abstract:
a discussion of 'non-contingent connection' between desires, feelings, etc and the actions which flow from them, as this has been presented in some recent philosophical psychology. the non-contingency of the connection is defended, but it is argued that this does nothing to show that desires, feelings, etc are not causes of action, but shows rather that the account of action embedded in ordinary language is teleological and intentional.

      Abstract:
This is a review article of L.H. armstrong's "a materialist theory of the mind". I try to distinguish two issues about materialism, one concerning 'identity' as a negation of dualism, and the other concerning 'reduction' or the explanatory language adequate to behavior. I argue that the second issue is fruitful to explore while the first is not; for among other reasons it leads to the misjudged attempts to establish identity-theory which armstrong shares with smart and others.

      Abstract:
a discussion of the mind-body identity thesis of writers like smart, place and feigl. it is argued that this is a side-issue; the major dispute between materialists and their opponents concerns rather the kind of explanations of human thought, action and feeling which are fundamental, e.g., the reduction of psychological explanations to neurophysiological ones.
